Personal Project, Magical Whimsey
Personal projects are so important. Magical whimsey, is something that just came to mind a few months ago. I am super excited to launch it officially. 🙂
I am an artist. This is obvious, right? All artists have a main medium. I bet you will be surprised to know that originally, I consider myself a painter. I got into photography in 2008, while studying painting at Cedar Crest College. My major there was Fine art, with a concentration in painting and my minor was Spanish. I used to get made fun of for the two, “what are you going to do, paint in Spanish?”…”be the bilingual painter?” ….Im sure you get the picture.
So, after we had kids, painting was hard for me to do. It takes a lot to paint with oils, setting up and prepping, cleaning up, painting, dry time etc. Eventually, I switched to only acrylics but still had a hard time finding the time to paint. So I turned to photography. Did you know that the word photography means to draw with light? This page here sums it up rather easily for us. 🙂 It does not seem odd to me that I found a way to “paint” using light with my camera.
Much of my earlier work is only using light and how I could manipulate it with my manual settings on my camera. Making the light fly, swirl, become darker and even lighter was like a huge game for me. I loved it and I was constantly learning how to manipulate my camera. I could never seem to get enough of learning about my DSLR. I swore back then I would never do portraits. Of course I would say that, I had no idea how to do portraits then. Fast forward to today, and my main body of work is made up of portraits.
I love taking pictures of PEOPLE; capturing sweet moments for them. Freezing a moment in time for them to look back on. Portraits are my favorite now. But it is still good to keep in touch with my earlier artist self and ‘feed’ her that creativity, which is the point of this particular blog post.
This is why I have started a personal project for myself. Im calling it Magical Whimsey. It is extremely fitting for me as I love to dream up ideas. I love the feeling of enchanted moments and the mysterical humor of life. I also love the way that you can create magic with your surroundings. Sometimes its all about blocking out all the noise and using your vision to its full capacity.
Magical Whimsey, meet the world. World meet my personal project. 🙂
